is a bacterial infection affecting the attachment fibers and adjacent bone that support the teeth and hold them in place. This common form of gum disease can occur at any age, and above the age of 18 more than half of the population has one form or another. After the age of 35, more than 75% of the people are affected by this painless disease. Regular dental visits and proper daily care can control the build-up of plaque and calculus, and the spread of decay, and your teeth will last forever. Periodontology is just one of the eight dental specialties attended and recognized by the American Dental Association. It is an entire dentistry branch devoted to the study of soft tissues and bone supporting the teeth, researching new techniques for treating these periodontal diseases, and replacing teeth lost to periodontal disease with dental implants.
